Working closely and continuously with victims of violence can affect the wellbeing of professionals and teams. Recognising this impact and creating appropriate conditions of care is also the responsibility of institutions and the State.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Violence does not affect only those who experience it directly. Regular exposure to accounts of abuse, suffering, loss and trauma can also take a toll on the professionals who support victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, this work may affect their wellbeing, relationships and perceptions of the world. It can also make it more difficult for them to sustain their work healthily. Recognising these effects is a first step towards addressing them without treating them solely as individual problems or signs of insufficient professional commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Esta reflexi\u00f3n estuvo en el centro de la Octava Sesi\u00f3n de la Data Justa Platform<\/a>, titulada Caring for ourselves while caring for others: wellbeing and care for teams working with trauma and violence.<\/em>The session was held on 7 September 2026 at Universidad Alberto Hurtado and brought together representatives of teams and institutions involved in supporting, assisting and providing reparation to victims of violent crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session was led by Elizabeth Lira Kornfeld<\/a> and Alejandra Vega \u00c1lvarez<\/a>, researchers at Data Justa and academics at Universidad Alberto Hurtado and Universidad de Atacama, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognising the impact of working with violence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The session addressed several risks associated with sustained work with victims, including exhaustion, stress, burnout,<\/em>compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These effects can be intensified by heavy workloads, limited opportunities for supervision, lack of recognition, unclear roles or insufficient institutional resources. Understanding the strain experienced by teams therefore requires attention both to the emotional demands of the work and to the conditions under which it is carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion acknowledged that being affected by sustained exposure to experiences of suffering is one of the challenges faced by those who work with victims. Far from being a personal weakness, it is a reality that requires appropriate spaces for recognition, support and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal resources discussed during the session included emotional self-regulation and self-compassion. Relevant practices include recognising emotions and warning signs, identifying personal limits, setting boundaries between work and personal life, and asking for help when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-compassion helps professionals acknowledge their own limits and needs without losing sight of the purpose of their work. Caring for oneself does not mean being less committed to victims. It means creating the conditions needed to sustain that support over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Care cannot depend on individuals alone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the central reflections of the session was that care cannot become an exclusively individual responsibility. Asking teams to develop self-care strategies is insufficient if organisations do not address the conditions that create or intensify work-related strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wellbeing of those who work with victims also depends on how their work is organised. Continuing education, specialised supervision, the distribution and rotation of complex cases, clear roles and appropriate workplace boundaries can all help protect teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other important measures include recognising the work performed, providing opportunities for peer support, maintaining open communication and establishing suitable mechanisms for resolving conflicts. Collaboration between institutions and network-based approaches can also help distribute responsibilities and prevent teams from facing particularly complex situations in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This perspective positions care as both an institutional and a State responsibility. If professionals and teams are expected to assist and support victims and contribute to reparation processes following violent crimes and serious human rights violations, they must also have access to resources, supervision and protection mechanisms that allow them to perform this work safely and sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caring for those who care is not an additional benefit, nor is it a task that can depend solely on the willingness or capacities of individual professionals. It is a necessary condition for sustaining the work of these teams and providing high-quality responses to victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eighth Session of the Platform created an opportunity to share experiences and reflect on a reality that often receives less attention: those who work daily with the consequences of violence can also be affected by it. Recognising these impacts and strengthening personal, collective and institutional forms of care contributes both to the wellbeing of teams and to the continuity of the support they provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
