Dr. Emiliano Treré

Emiliano Treré is Professor of Media Ecology and Social Transformation at the School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) at Cardiff University, UK. Widely recognized for his research on digital activism, social movements, and critical data studies—with a particular focus on the Global South—he is a highly cited author in these fields. Between 2011 and 2016, he served as a Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro in Mexico.

He is a member of the Data Justice Lab and Co-Principal Investigator of the project “Towards Democratic Auditing: Civic Participation in the Scoring Society”funded by the Open Society Foundations. He has published more than 50 works in five languages, including journal articles and books. His most recent book, Hybrid Media Activism (Routledge, 2019), received the Outstanding Book Award from the Activism, Communication and Social Justice of the International Communication Association (ICA). Other notable publications include the collective volume Citizen Media and Practice (Routledge, 2019) and six co-edited special issues.

Emiliano is also co-founder of the initiative Big Data Sur, co-editor of the multilingual Covid-19 from the Margins and Vice-Chair of the Communication and Democracy Section of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). He also co-directs the Data Justice book series published by SAGE. His work has been referenced by the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation, and he is a frequent keynote speaker on the challenges, implications, and myths of the datafied society.
