The Millennium Nucleus for Research on Production and State Use of Data on Severe Human Rights Violations (DATA JUSTA- NCS2024_69), directed by Oriana Bernasconi (Director) and Elizabeth Lira (Alternate Director), opens a call for designers and visual artists interested in carrying out a three-month research stay within the framework of the project.
ABOUT THE DATA JUSTA PROJECT
DATA JUSTA is an interdisciplinary, exploratory, inductive, and comparative collaborative scientific initiative. Its objective is to analyze how the Chilean State generates knowledge about human rights violations and its impact on the responses offered to victims. The project focuses on examining the production and use of data on victims of human rights violations and other forms of state-sponsored violence, as well as intervention practices concerning these victims, evaluating their implications. The study is developed through a relational, socio-material, and multi-sited ethnography of the State, centered on three cases: a) human trafficking, b) institutional violence in the context of the social uprising (2019-2020), and c) attempted femicides.
OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH STAY
Design a data visualization proposal that allows for the analysis, communication, and dissemination of the findings of the Millennium Nucleus DATA JUSTA research, focusing on four strategic areas of the project:
- Scientific publications
- Community engagement
- I work with state counterparts
- Dissemination to society
The data visualization proposal must be adaptable to different formats and audiences, and fulfill multiple functions: facilitate the analysis of the data produced within the framework of the project, support academic writing and its circulation in spaces such as seminars, workshops and conferences, as well as allow the feedback of results to the general public and the state institutions with which we collaborate, and accompany activities promoting rights, education and prevention of these forms of violence.
MODALITY OF STAY AND EXPECTED PRODUCTS
The internship will be hybrid, lasting three months with a workload of 16 hours per week, beginning October 1, 2025. During the first month, the selected candidate will integrate into the team to gain in-depth knowledge of the project, understand its objectives, and collaborate on defining the visualization brief. In the second month, they will be expected to develop a concrete design proposal that addresses the project's needs and the various target audiences. Finally, the third month will be dedicated to refining and improving the proposal through an iterative collaborative process with both the Millennium Nucleus team and the target audiences, in order to refine the product and ensure its relevance, feasibility, and impact. Each stage will have associated compensation.
At the end of the stay, the products that must be returned are:
- A data visualization kit that includes graphic/digital proposals for each of the four areas (scientific publications, community engagement, state counterparts and rights promotion), with their respective formats.
- A work plan for the implementation of the designed proposal that includes an estimate of the necessary resources and deadlines.
